Cycling Santa Monica to San Diego
In November 2014 I rode my bike from Santa Monica to San Diego. The ride was 235 km (146 miles) with approximately 1,100 m (3,600 ft) elevation gain overall. I had never attempted a ride this long before so I was very nervous but also excited as I knew it would be along the beautiful Pacific Coast. Here is my adventure…!
This ride was awesome and I would recommend it to anyone wanting a good challenge in a spectacular setting. The only thing I would do differently next time would be to avoid riding through the Port of Los Angeles area because there are no bike lanes and drivers don’t share the road. Instead, I’d ride along the coast towards Palos Verdes and San Pedro and I think it would be safer. Safety is so important when you are riding so close to vehicles and on a few occasions I spotted a few ghost bicycles (to indicate where a cyclist has been killed or hit) that reminded me of how vulnerable we are. Once you get to Seal Beach you are on bike paths almost the entire way to San Diego…it’s amazing!
A few days in San Diego
My husband joined me in San Diego and we spent a few days there to celebrate 1) my ride from Santa Monica to San Diego and 2) my birthday! We stayed in the beautiful Gaslamp Quarter and spent three days exploring what San Diego had to offer. We ate at some great restaurants including one featured in the Top Gun movie and walked all over the city. Some places I would recommend you visit if you have a few days there: Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, Harbour, USS Midway Museum, and Balboa Park. Next time we go I would like to visit the San Diego Zoo and Coronado Island.
